The spanel is a specialised kind of spatula used to turn and fold the pancake or the crepe when cooking on the &#8220;billig&#8221;. Made from an aspen that fell during a storm.</p>

This is a modern interpretation of the traditional decorated spoons made in the west of Brittany up to the 1st WW.  These spoons were often made to fold, and were richly decorated with carving and inlays.</p>

Their coloured decoration is an inlay of sealing wax into a chip-carved pattern. This type of decoration was typical of spoons from the Finistère region of Brittany.</p>
