#whywemake
I make physical things to balance my actions between my internal and external energies. I feel the imbalance deeply when I'm in my head too much, and also when I'm in a frenzy making and fixing things without introspection and philosophizing. It can be a struggle to keep that balance, but vital for me. I also wonder, more recently, if making is an easier way for me to connect with others, through an object, rather than directly in language.Erica Moody is a metal craftsman working in midcoast Maine, where she cultivates her line of forged and fabricated serving utensils, and continues her craft’s foundation of fabricating custom metal commissions for architects and designers, such as furniture and hardware, in her business she started in 2001.
Erica has taught metalworking at locations such as Massachusetts College of Art & Design, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Penland School of Crafts, Haystack School of Crafts, Center for Metal Arts, and The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. Her utensils have been featured in publications such as Bon Appetit, Saveur, Metalsmith, Maine Home & Design, New Yorker’s The Cut.
