#whywemake
I make because of what it gives to me. It’s instructive, it’s generous and it’s a window to the inside world. It is the best way I have to learn what I’m capable of and what my limitations are.I am a furniture designer and maker in Southampton, Massachusetts. I built wooden boats for many years and have been making custom furniture since 2014.
Experimentation in key. I strive to make each work a composition of color, shape, and form that exists to enhance your life as well as provide a function. My design and craft ideas draw heavily on my training in fine art photography. I create furniture as I would compose a photograph, with a goal to hold your interest and guiding your eye throughout a design. From my two decades of experience building wooden boats, I've learned to embrace curvature and the process of trusting my eye as I builds furniture.
I strive for the interweaving of balance and connection. Balance is the thickness of the back of a chair as it becomes the thinness of a leg, or the carved handle that blends into the edge of a curved door. Connection is the grain of the wood and its natural defects, reminiscent of both luxury and nature. Tying it together are bold riffs on traditional joinery, which give a piece its strength and durability, enabling it to be passed down through many generations.
