#whywemake
I have always made things. I had the best Grandma with kind gentle Grandma's hands that showed me so many different crafts. From her I learnt how to occupy my mind with meaningful and enriching tasks which have become a way of life. She also taught me the importance of a good walk and then to sit on the hill and listen to the birds. I taught Design Technology for many years, exploring mosaic making when i had time, but for the last 7 years it has become my most favourite artform and I love its endless possibilities. I've just become a Grandma and my hands are ready to pass on what they knowThe focus of my work is to create realistic studies of birds and beasts brought to life through the medium of contemporary mosaic. I live in rural Devon and love to explore the lush green Atlantic rainforests found here.
I use salvaged vintage china, unglazed ceramic tiles and mudlarked objects hand cut into delicate shapes and shards to create the impression of feathers and fur. The textures and patterns of the ceramics I use are as important as the colours and are chosen to bring depth and character to my creatures. I mount my work in tree hollows and on locally sourced native hard wood boards.
