#whywemake
I make to keep my hands occupied and my mind calm. To be present in the moment and connected to the process. I make to create objects that are beautiful and useful, and to bring joy into other people’s homes.I am a brush and broom maker living in wild West Wales. Working with natural, sustainable materials is really important to me and I am inspired to make pieces that are beautiful as well as useful. Previously I’ve experimented with carving wooden spoons, turning bowls on a traditional pole lathe and weaving baskets, but this is the craft that seems to have stuck!
All of my brushes and brooms are made by me, entirely by hand. The only mechanised tool that I use is my electric chainsaw which I use for cutting wood for broom handles from my small patch of woodland.
I was selected as a TOAST New Maker 2022.
My plans for the future include experimenting with natural dyeing so I can incorporate this into my practice, and growing my own broomcorn.
Making tangible, useful things helps me to feel grounded. When I’m not crafting, you can find me growing vegetables on a windy hillside, walking in the woods, or renovating my nearly 200 year-old house.
